Australian Ethical leads multisector fund upgrades by Morningstar

Morningstar conducted a review of the 2021 Australian Multi-sector funds based on qualitative research conducted on 125 strategies. Seven strategies achieved ratings upgrades on greater product confidence; 17 unlisted funds were downgraded owing to reduced confidence in the investment team; the researcher initiated coverage on nine strategies, and ceased coverage of one strategy.

With “green” investing becoming all the rage, Australian Ethical has had a remarkable year, attracting billions in funds under management as investors became more ethical and socially responsible. Funds that have invested responsibly have rapidly gained market share and delivered stronger investment returns than their peers, and the Australian Ethical Balanced fund is no exception.

Morningstar says, “this strategy boasts a strong environmental, social and governance pedigree” with a number of the AE funds delivering impressive investment returns; the standout being the Australian shares fund, which returned 41.9%.

In November 2020, Morningstar named Australian Ethical as one of only six global leaders for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitment. Since then, no other Australian asset manager has been added to the list of leaders. Morningstar initiated coverage on the Australian Ethical Balanced fund for retail and wholesale. Coverage was also initiated at BT Index Suite and Perpetual ESG Real Return were also initiated.

Morningstar upgraded BlackRock Global Allocation Australia to Bronze on the back of a broader skilled team and the firm’s advanced risk-management systems, which further boosted confidence.

In similar fashion, the Perpetual Diversified Real Return fund was upgraded to Silver as its strategy delivers risk management without sacrificing returns like few others.

Vanguard, on the other hand, has delivered a mix bag with two funds being upgraded and two funds downgraded. The Vanguard Diversified Balanced ETF was upgraded to Silver ETF, on the back of its solid team, simple approach, portfolio, and low fees. The Vanguard Growth Index Aus and LifeStrategy Growth were upgraded to Silver. However offsetting these were the Vanguard High Growth Index and LifeStrategy High Growth, both downgraded to Bronze.

“These strategies remain some of the highest ratings in the multisector space because of their solid team, simple approach and portfolio, and low fees. However, under Morningstar’s enhanced rating methodology, these share classes have fallen a notch within the Australia fund multi-sector aggressive Morningstar Category because of their relative ranking in the peer group,” says Morningstar.

Morningstar downgraded AMP Capital Core Retirement Fund to Negative and AMP Capital Multi-Asset’s three share classes to Negative, based purely on the internal politics currently at play. The multi-asset team has experienced continued staff turnover in the past three years, with the CIO, head of sector multi-manager and several analysts leaving in quick succession. Morningstar says “managing a flexible asset-allocation strategy is difficult in the most stable environments, but with the team’s unrest, we think this puts the process at a distinct disadvantage, too. Putting all this together, the investment case has deteriorated significantly, and we suggest investors best avoid.”
